How it works?

Snapchat

What is it?

Snapchat is an image messaging and multimedia mobile application. One of the principal concepts of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are only available for a short time before they become inaccessible.

Who created it?

Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, former students at Stanford University in September 2011.

Functioning

Snapchat works similarly to an instant messaging application allowing you to add contacts and send them messages in the form of photos or videos. The main difference is that the sender selects the time in which the receiver can see that message (from 1 to 10 seconds). Users can also keep their Snaps for 24 hours, in a public section (for all contacts that have been added) called "Stories". Users, if they wish to keep their Snaps can save them in the "Memories" section, from where they can modify or send them again.

Functioning

Personal use

This use is mainly based on sharing personal experiences with followers in the user's history, as well as sending photos or videos to a single user, in order to show him the moments he lives in his day to day life.

Use for business

Although many companies still don't use this application, big companies like McDonald's or Heineken have launched to use this platform, whit it they can share their advertising campaing to inform users of new products or promotions. According to a MediaScience study, advertising captures more attention than other apps.

Its value

In May 2013 users sent 14 billion photos and videos daily, while stories were reproduced about 500 million times a day. And at the end of August, the company was valued in 10 billions US dolards.
