PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE

HOW DOES THERMAL ENERGY TRAVEL THROUGH OBJECTS?

Thermal energy always travels from a hotter object to a colder one. For example, when we put a hot liquid into a cold container, the heat moves from the liquid to the container. The liquid gets colder, and the container gets hotter.

Look at this pictures. Which spoon will get hotter?

Thermal energy travels through objects in three different ways. Let's investigate

THAT'S CORRECT. The spoon in picture B will get hotter because the heat moves from the coffee to the cup and the spoon.

EXPANSION Thermal energy causes the molecules in a solid, liquid or gas to vibrate. As a result, the material expands. Some materials expand faster than others, for example: gases expand faster than liquid or solids. Sometimes, when gases receive thermal energy, they expand very rapidly and cause explosions.

EVAPORATION When thermal energy is applied to a liquid, it changes into a gas. This process is called EVAPORATION. As the liquid receives thermal energy, its molecules move faster than before, and they separate from each other. Finally, the liquid changes into a gas.

MELTING When a solid receives thermal energy, it changes into a liquid. This process is called MELTING. As the molecules in the object receive thermal energy, they begin to move faster. They also move away from each other. The physical appearance of the object changes because the molecules are moving faster.

CHEMICAL CHANGES Thermal energy can cause chemical changes. When we cook food, the thermal energy of the oven causes permanent changes in the food. For example, when we make fairy cakes, we mix eggs, flour and sugar and get a thick liquid. Thermal energy changes this mixture into a solid fairy cake. This change can't be reversed: we can't change the fairy cakes back into eggs, flour and sugar again.
