The #CoolPE experience

by @acalderon_pe

and the #Coolers

Through the slides, you will see a summary of the educational experience lived in the module Sociological Concepts of Teaching and Learning Physical Education. It was taught in the Bachelor of Science in Physical Education - Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) Department at the University of Limerick (UL). Hope you enjoy as much as we did! =)

Welcome to the #CoolPE experience! To follow the presentation just move the mouse over the animated icons or objects (most has a link to an interactivity)! It is mobile friendly, but accessing from a laptop or desktop you will enjoy it much better. To go to next slide, click the lower right icon.

The goal

#CoolPE

Looking for inclusive physical education, despite the challenging scenarios! Gender, sexuality, race, abilities, personalities, technology issues, religions, socio-economic status, immigration, mental illness, obesity, bodies, disabilities... What else?

To examine how some sociological topics (above) have affected and are currently affecting the teaching and learning in physical education.

The Actors

Every week, we met a student (you tuber) that sadly is vlogging about the reasons why they hate physical education. All the videos are used to prompt project ideas. We used questions as: How do you think you as PE teachers could help Kelsey to experience physical education in a more positive way?, are your project innovative enough to think about a project in which all these kind of students find a place for enjoying PE?

2

Instructional design

All the weeks, we used these resources to improve (or try to) the students' engagement: Clip of the week: Every class started with a YouTube video in which a young is vlogging about PE. Sadly, all the clips had a common topic. It is, I hate PE! (See previous slide) Reading of the week: A research article that covered one of the sociological topics developed along the semester. Some weeks we had debates in class about some questions about the reading (Click) Highlights of the lecture: A summary of the ‘lessons learn’ in the lecture was dropped out to the Slack class channel. Happy hour: Once a week we had an hour to solve doubts of the assignment. It was developed through the the Slack class channel .

the module

Team work: Infographic To design, an infographic using either Piktochart, or Genially whose title is Cool and Inclusive PE. 1) The process of design will follow these steps: (a) Searching research articles, blogs, vlogs, or websites related to the topic of your project; (b) Curating/selecting the best ones to include them in the infographic; (c) Designing it using Piktochart or Genially; and (d) Sharing through Twitter and others social media channels using at least the hashtags #CoolPE #InclusivePE and/or #UncoolPE #UninclusivePE, and trying to engage in social media conversations with some people that you think will be interested in your infographic. 2) The infographic have to include: (a) Youtube embedded videos of students seen in lectures (two or three maximum); (b) links to full texts research articles interesting to the module; (c) link to the presentation of the team project; (d) key points learnt for teaching and learning in physical education; and (e) any other stuff you want to include (creativity).

Individual work: Blog To write a blog post on your personal blog (either using Blogger or Wordpress) reflecting about the whole educational (learning) process and answering this key module questions: (1)how could service learning, personalized learning and/or some pedagogical models be included in your teaching to deliver an inclusive PE? (2)how the sociological issues/topics taught, have affected and are currently affecting the teaching of physical education?(3)what are the main practical implications for teaching and learning that you learned in this module?;(4)what did you learn by doing your team project?; (5)do you think is a good assignment to learn about the module contents?. Justify please. (6) do you think to self-assess your assignments is effective for learning? Justify please. 7) what have been your main activators for learning and engagement in this module? tell me about the constraints?. 8) some words for the module coordinator to improve his teaching (please). Remember that you should reflect theory and not simply opinions, in this way, you will be expected to use sociological terms competently in your reflections. Referencing as per “Cite it Right” is expected.

Team work: Project To design, develop, present and discuss a project (Project-Based Learning) to be delivered in a specific context (high diversity) as physical education (PE) teachers of a school. 1) What do you do as PE teacher to deliver an inclusive and quality PE in a challenging school context? Think about how service learning, personalized learning or some pedagogical models (as trendy and innovative educational approaches) could be part of the projects. You will struggle reflecting and thinking about a how a good project looks like. To help you I created a Slack channel(#CoolPE) in which you could ask to two amazing PE teachers about projects ideas or doubts. They, Gloria and Claire, are going to be your critical friends. You could text them!

Some posts

Here is a selection of some posts written by the students: You have to write a blog post in your personal blog (either using Blogger or Wordpress) reflecting about the whole educational (learning) process and answering this key module questions (each question a different post): (1) how could service learning, personalized learning and/or some pedagogical models be included in your teaching to deliver an inclusive PE? (2) how the sociological issues/topics taught, have affected and are currently affecting the teaching of physical education? (3) what are the main practical implications for teaching and learning that you learned in this module?; (4) what did you learn by doing your team project?; (5) do you think is a good assignment to learn about the module contents?. Justify please. (6) do you think to self-assess your assignments is effective for learning? Justify please. 7) what have been your main activators for learning and engagement in this module? tell me about the constraints? (be honest please). 8) Some words for the module coordinator to improve his teaching (please). Remember that in the first three questions you should reflect theory (use research articles to justify) and not simply opinions.
