GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION

Jagodina extends from 43 ° 52 ‘ to 44 ° 07' north latitude and 21 ° 02 ‘ to 21 ° 21' east longitude at an altitude of 116 meters. It is located in the central part of Pomoravlje, only 136 km south of Belgrade, and 130 km north of Nis, on the corridor A-10 international highway E-75 and thus forms the heart of Pomoravlje.

RELIEF

Jagodina covers an area of 470 km², in the plain around river Belica. Rivers Velika Morava and Lugomir flow through the territory of the town . The town is surrounded by mountains – Juhor (755m) and Crni vrh (708m).

CLIMATE

Climatic features form the geographical position and relief. The temperate continental climate dominates, with cold winters and hot summers, with minor deviations, while in spring the warmer currents from the South can be felt. They affect on faster snow melting, rise in water levels and faster growth of vegetation.

POPULATION

According to the Republic Bureau of Statistics (2011), the total population in the territory of Jagodina was 71 195. Approximately, 50.70% of the population lives in the town, while 49.30% lives in nearby villages. According to the ethnic composition of the territory, the town is mostly inhabited by Serbs and less by Roma people, Montenegrins, Macedonians, Croatians, Slovenians, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Romanians, Gorani, Muslims and other ethnic minorities.

Name

For six centuries, the town had three names: Jagodna (Strawberry), Jagodina and Svetozarevo.The first written document about Jagodina dates from 15 July 1399. In 1946 it was named after a socialist, Svetozar Markovic.

During the Turks reign, Turkish settlement was formed from the small village at the foot of the Red Hill. They called it Palanka Jagodina, hence the later name Jagodina.

INDUSTRIES

At the beginning of XIX century the town had about 200 stores and 330 workshops. In the fifties of the nineteenth century the first industrial facilities were opened, as well as schools, pharmacies, hospitals. At the beginning of XX century Jagodina had a large number of industrial companies as well as workshops and trade shops.

Currently, Jagodina is a modern, touristic, highly developed industrial town. It is called “ the City of the Future“ for a reason

Jagodina lies at the foot of the Djurdje’s hill, a unique symbol of the town. It is a beautiful place with lots of greenery including various species of flowers and trees. The first artificial waterfall in Serbia, the fountain of 122m and the Open summer stage for 1200 spectators also adorn this lovely place. During summer months, the stage hosts numerous performers of modern, classical and folk music. All concerts are free.

The zoo named "Tiger", the only one in Serbia south of Belgrade, presents a unique combination of flora and fauna. Over 80 different animal species found their new home here. Jagodina’s zoo with its highest standards became an inevitable destination for school excursions.

Near this town complex is Aqua park, first in Serbia, which has seven swimming pools for sports and recreational activities. One of the swimming pools is Olympic. During summer months, the 600m system of slides and many other water attractions are available for tourists. For one summer, the Aqua park is visited by thousands of people.

In Jagodina, history is palpable through the characters of Serbian saints, emperors, writers, athletes ... Jagodina is the sixth town in Europe and the first in Serbia which has the Wax Museum. The museum contains 29 figures of prominent personalities from the earliest and the latest history of Serbia.

We highly recommend visiting cultural institutions of the highest national ranking: = the local museum with rich collection of over 100 000 exhibits = the Museum of Naive Art, a unique institution in the country, nestled in one of the most beautiful houses in town, it preserves over 2,500 paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphics of most prominent naive artists from Serbia and abroad = the National library = the Church of St Michael = the Church of St. Peter and Paul in the town centre.

This tourist presentation shouldn’t be completed without mentioning the Botanical garden of Faculty of Education. There are 240 plants of which 30 are extremely rare and only grow in this area. The park also contains a more than 500 year-old oak tree, 113 year-old plane trees, 20 hazelnut trees that are 30 meters high, a hawthorn tree that is 5 meters high…
