Presentation

The legend goes in Burgos that there was an apothecary who lived in Saint Nicolas School. He had taken vows of chastity as an act of voluntary devotion at a fairly old age, which had granted him a job for the Jesuit Order. He was in charge of the school and had to keep the premises and the garden clean and well serviced. He was an apothecary by trade, and he enjoyed collecting herbs and spices, compounding taylor-made prescriptions for patients, which gave him an extra income which he wanted for his daughter. He and his wife had had Angelica twenty years before. But now they both, he and his daughter, lived alone as the wife had died when Angelica was twelve. She helped with the domestic chores and preparing herbs and remedies, but she was still haunted by her mother's disappearance. Villagers whispered the tale, but her overprotective father refused to discuss it.All the while, she dreamt of the world beyond ... of travel and adventure and romance...

Task 2

The apothecary used to spend most of his afternoons working in the garden and later in his workshop. There he prepared his potions and remedies. While he was there, Angelica was locked in her room, where she used to read, write and paint. She liked painting the plants and flowers of the garden. She liked it very much because it was a very interesting one. Knowing what a good apothecary her father was, visitors had brought plants from all over the world, and he was really proud of it.He had divided the garden in different patches where he grew different types of plants: trees, herbs, flowers, etc.

  • Take pictures of the plants in the school garden.

Task 3

The apothecary often had dreams, strange dreams that he was unable to explain. He used to dream of dry landscapes, large areas where there was nothing but the garbage produced by man. He also had these dreams in which he found it difficult to find good quality herbs to prepare his recipies, or tasty orchard produts and fruit for his home.On Saturdays, if the weather was permited it, he would walk with his daughter along the banks of the river and he could see the growth of the city of Burgos. That was something he was really concerned about, and he had these thoughts that one day Burgos would become the landscapes of his dreams.

There once was a girl. She asked a boy if she was pretty, he said "No". She asked him if he wanted to be with her forever, he said "No". Then she asked him if he would cry if she walked away, he said "No". She had heard enough; she needed to leave. As she walked away he grabbed her arm and told her to stay. He said "You're not pretty, you're beautiful. I don`t want to be with you forever, I need to be with you forever. And I wouldn't cry if you walked away, I would die."

Angelica liked to play and daydream. She sometimes invented stories like the one that goes:

As we know from the title, despite her father's efforts, somebody managed to get in touch with her and conviced her of something to win her favour.
